How to Clean a Humidifier – 7 Easy Steps

The first cold snap in New England usually brings two things: the heat comes on, and the air inside gets dry fast. That’s when humidifiers come out of the closet, and when they need the most attention.

A humidifier holds standing water all day. Without regular care, that water leaves mineral scale in the tank and can grow film, mold and bacteria that end up back in the air you breathe.

The good news: keeping one clean takes about 15 minutes every few days. Here’s how our team at Simplify Cleaning Services recommends doing it, which products to use, and what to keep far away from your humidifier.

Quick Answer: How to Clean a Humidifier

  1. Unplug the humidifier and empty the tank.
  2. Take apart the washable parts.
  3. Soak the tank and base in a humidifier descaling solution to remove mineral buildup.
  4. Wipe and gently scrub with a soft brush or cloth.
  5. Disinfect with 3% hydrogen peroxide or the product your manual recommends.
  6. Rinse several times with clean water.
  7. Let every part dry completely before putting it back together.

Do this every three days while you’re using the humidifier, and empty and refill the tank with fresh water every day.

What You’ll Need

  • A humidifier descaling solution, or the cleaner recommended in your manual
  • 3% hydrogen peroxide (the regular kind sold in drugstores) for disinfecting
  • A soft brush, like a bottle brush or a clean toothbrush
  • A soft microfiber cloth
  • Clean water for rinsing
  • Gloves, if the product label calls for them

Keep your manual nearby. Some models have parts that can’t get wet, and the manual tells you which ones.

How to Clean a Humidifier, Step by Step

Step 1: Unplug and Empty It

Turn the humidifier off and unplug it. If you have a warm mist model, let it cool down first. Pour out any water left in the tank and the base.

Step 2: Take Apart the Washable Parts

Remove the tank, the cap and any other parts your manual lists as washable. Don’t force anything apart, and never put the motor base or any electrical part under water.

Step 3: Remove the Mineral Buildup

That white, chalky crust inside the tank is mineral scale from tap water. Fill the tank and base with a humidifier descaling solution, following the label for how much to use and how long to let it sit.

Step 4: Scrub Gently

Use a soft brush to reach corners and the opening of the tank, then wipe everything with a microfiber cloth. Skip steel wool, scouring pads and abrasive powders. They scratch the plastic, and scratches give buildup more places to hide.

Step 5: Disinfect

If your manual doesn’t name a specific disinfectant, the EPA suggests a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution on the surfaces that touch water. Pour it in, swirl it around the tank and base, let it sit for a few minutes, then pour it out.

Step 6: Rinse Well

Rinse every part with several changes of clean water until there’s no smell of cleaner left. This step matters more than most people think: whatever stays in the tank goes into the mist.

Step 7: Dry Completely and Reassemble

Set the parts on a clean towel and let them air dry before you put the humidifier back together. A fully dry tank is your best defense against mold.

How Often Should You Clean a Humidifier?

The EPA recommends this routine for portable humidifiers:

  • Every day: empty the tank, wipe it dry and refill it with fresh water.
  • Every third day: do a full cleaning, following the steps above.
  • End of the season: clean it one last time, make sure every part is completely dry, throw away used filters or cartridges, and store it somewhere dry.

If your manual asks for a different schedule, follow your manual.

Tip from our team: set a recurring phone reminder for every third day. It’s the easiest way to keep the routine going all winter.

Can You Clean a Humidifier With Vinegar?

Some manuals mention vinegar, but at Simplify we don’t use it or recommend it, on humidifiers or anywhere else in your home. Here’s why:

  • The smell lingers. Any vinegar left in the tank gets misted into the room.
  • It isn’t a disinfectant. It can loosen scale, but it won’t do the job of a proper disinfecting step.
  • It’s easy to get wrong. Vinegar left sitting in a tank, or mixed with another cleaner, causes more problems than it solves.

A descaling solution made for humidifiers removes mineral buildup just as well, and 3% hydrogen peroxide takes care of disinfecting.

Can You Put Bleach in a Humidifier?

Only if your manual specifically says it’s safe for your model, and only diluted exactly as the manual describes. Bleach is harsh on plastic and seals, and any residue ends up in the mist, so rinse the tank several times afterward.

Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or any other cleaner. The combination releases toxic fumes.

What Never to Use on a Humidifier

  • Vinegar. For the reasons above.
  • Essential oils in a unit that isn’t designed for them. They can damage the tank and the internal parts.
  • Steel wool, scouring pads or abrasive powders. They scratch the plastic.
  • Mixed cleaning products. One product at a time, rinsed out completely.
  • Old water. Water left sitting in the tank for days is the number one cause of a dirty humidifier.

How to Keep Mold and Buildup Away

  • Use distilled water. It has far fewer minerals than tap water, so there’s less scale to clean and fewer minerals released into the air.
  • Change the water every day, even if the tank isn’t empty.
  • Keep indoor humidity at or below 50%. Above that, mold and mildew grow more easily. An inexpensive hygrometer tells you exactly where you are.
  • Keep the area around the humidifier dry. If the windowsill or nightstand next to it is damp, turn the humidifier down.
  • Watch the basement. Older New England homes with basements are prone to mildew in the fall. If your basement already feels damp, it doesn’t need a humidifier.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Topping off instead of refilling. Adding fresh water on top of old water keeps the old water in the tank.
  • Skipping the rinse. Cleaner left in the tank goes straight into the mist.
  • Putting it back together wet. Damp parts sealed together are exactly where mold starts.
  • Storing it dirty. A humidifier put away in March without cleaning will be a problem in November.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean a humidifier without vinegar?

Use a humidifier descaling solution to remove mineral buildup, then disinfect with 3% hydrogen peroxide or the product recommended in your manual. Rinse several times with clean water and let every part dry completely.

How often should I clean a humidifier?

Empty and refill it with fresh water every day, and give it a full cleaning every third day while it’s in use. Clean it again at the end of the season before storing it.

What is the white dust around my humidifier?

It’s usually minerals from tap water, released into the air as the humidifier runs. Switching to distilled water is the easiest fix.

Can I use tap water in my humidifier?

You can, but tap water leaves more mineral buildup in the tank and can release white dust into the room. Distilled water keeps the humidifier cleaner for longer.

Can I put bleach in my humidifier?

Only if your manual says it’s safe for your model. Dilute it exactly as directed, rinse thoroughly, and never mix it with vinegar or any other cleaner.
